With a slower news week, I wanted to take a sec and do a little mind dump on everything Bills-related in the last few days – as well as some notes on fun things coming on the site!
Bruce’s Number Retirement
Seeing the Bills’ announcement that 78 would be retired – I was quite happy. One, because Bruce truly was a transcendent player. The second – and kinda selfish reason – is hopefully it will lead the way to getting Thurman, Andre and DT’s numbers retired as well. On WGR, Russ Brandon made it seem like Thurman’s is in the works as well, so I’m encouraged – and if I’m being honest with you, I’d hope that 34’s retirement would also include the family of Cookie Gilchrist as well. I also am hopeful that Darryl and Andre receive their days in the sun number retirement wise as well.
The biggest reason I say this? Our own Michael Necci, who years ago gave me grief over not caring that Lee Evans got to wear Reed’s 83. There’s certain things you shouldn’t do, even if it’s in the spirit of “passing the mantle” to someone and as a number geek I kinda lost sight of that. To have Keith Ellison (no offense Keith) be associated with Talley’s 56 is kinda – in New Day parlance – booty.
Before I finish up on numbers – I want to also agree with Tim Graham and his bold assertion that the 32 needs to be re-issued. With Terry and Kim at the helm of the team, as many have surmised from their time with the Sabres thus far – alumni are important. In the case of Orenthal James, there needs to be a hard move away from deifying him. Mind you, I’m fully aware of the DUIs that Bruce has received over the years – but that isn’t murder (allegedly). Or the car chase. Or a major TV series – both in documentary (ESPN) and in serialized fiction (FX). The sooner it becomes “just a number” the sooner you don’t have to apologize (if you do) for “the Juice” being up on the wall.
Fun Stuff Coming Soon
As I mentioned when I first took over BW, there’re some ideas I wanted to play around with. Well, one of them will be rolling out as the football and hockey slows down in the summer: Buffalo Wins @ The Movies. Not only will staff be reviewing movies – we’ll also have guest reviewers on our podcast, which is in the design phase.
Yup – we’re getting a podcast too.
Of all the projects I’ve been working on in the past month and change, this – and recruiting some of our new talent into the team Nick Fury style – have been the highlights.
If you’re interested in taking part – hit me up on twitter on the main site feed (@Buffalowins) or on my person twitter feed (@RDotDeuce).
