One year ago today, baseball lost one of its most iconic figures. Ernie Banks, the man affectionately known as Mr. Cub, passed away due to complications from a heart attack. He started his career in 1950 with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League. Banks managed to play his way into Major League Baseball where he played 19 years for the Chicago Cubs from 1953 until 1971. In that time, he posted a .274 batting average to go along with 512 home runs and 1,636 runs batted in. Banks ended his career with one of the all-time great baseball resumes including:
- 14 All Star Game Selections
- 1958, 1959 Most Valuable Player
- 1960 Gold Glove
Ernie Banks was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977 to cap off his illustrious career. Today, while you are snowed into your home, we would like you to take a minute to honor one of the greatest players in baseball history. Rest easy, Mr. Cub.
