Perhaps the worst part of last night’s rainout is this: the Penguins’ first playoff game is tonight. I’m not complaining about the Pens being in the playoffs, of course, but I do love the undivided attention that the Pirates get during the earliest part of the season and that’s pretty much over with now. With the Pens’ game moving the Pirates off of Root Sports Pittsburgh, but not being televised nationally (which means that people like me have to go out to see it), it’s possible that this Pirate game will have fewer Pirate-fan eyeballs on it than just about any other game they play this year. That’s just one of the realities of losing for as long as the Pirates have been losing, I guess.
The Bucs and Brewers are sending out the same two pitchers that were scheduled to throw last night in Kevin Correia and Shaun Marcum. Correia’s been decent in his first two starts, but he’s pitching way above his head with his 1.29 ERA right now. Marcum, meanwhile, was the Brewers’ headlining offseason acquisition for a couple weeks before they went out and also traded for Zack Greinke. I know a lot of Pirate fans like to call the Brewers our rivals, but that’s not really true. You don’t get to have rivals when you lose 105 games. The Brewers are just a team full of jerks that I don’t like all that much. I hope someday the Pirates are good enough to qualify as a rival for someone. Until then, I’ll settle for getting back above .500 for another night.
First pitch tonight is at 7:05. Unfortunately, I won’t be around in the gamethread because I have to go out to watch the Pens’ game. (Because you have to twist my arm to get me to drink beer.)
