First of all, this is an open apology to Scott Reynolds, I was disgusted by your article on Lovie Smith needing to be fired if the Bucs lost, but have to right to call someone out the way I did.
However, my point remains…unlike how its claimed that you said “Lovie “COULD” lose his job” you were CALLING for Lovie Smith’s job if he lost to Jacksonville.
You made this comment on your site…
Coaching changes don’t work? How are Dan Quinn and the 4-0 Falcons doing right now? How are Todd Bowles and the 3-1 NY Jets doing right now?
Those coaches did not walk into a team as the 3rd head coach in 4 seasons!!! That is our problem Scott. Maybe Lovie isnt the best guy for the job, but he needs time.
You mention in your article that Lovie hired Jeff Tedford who was out of his league in the NFL. What do you base this on?? Jeff Tedford coached the Bucs for 3 preseason games, how do you know he would have been “Out of his league”? Based on Marcus Arroyo’s attempt to coach it? If were going to compare, isnt Tedford’s offense similar to Chip Kelley’s?
People on the internet have defended you as being impartial to any allegiances and thus your articles are neutral, but in fact they are not, they are partial to YOUR point of view on something.
Yes, your entitled to this, but I stand on my grounds that calling for a Head Coach to be fired after 20 games after we’ve already had 2 in the last 4 seasons, basically 4 head coaches in 6 years, is DANGEROUS to the state of our franchise.
Needless to say, if there are no Tampa Bay Bucs, there is no Pewter Report. You have an excellent reputation as being at the heartbeat of the Bucs. No one on this planet provides fans with better access to Bucs information than you do, and I have said so on many occasions.
Thats why I was so upset, that someone of your caliber would not understand the ramifications long term of what could happen. Please tell me if this scenario is so far fetched…
Bucs fired Lovie, get 4th coach in 6 years. Glazers do what they do best, go totally against the grain from their last hire. Bring in young coach, Offensive minded, totally new approach. He hires defensive coordinator that will scrap the Bucs Tampa Two, but in fact goes too far, more toward a two Gap system like Raheem Morris tried to implement in his first year, or maybe even a 3-4.
Players like Gerald McCoy and several other D linemen no longer fit the bill. Davonte David thrives, but like all coaches, 1/3 of the team’s talent is jettisoned. With an even lesser amount of talent than the current roster, the Bucs continue the pattern of going 3-13 and firing coaches until fan apathy builds so bad, no one comes out to the stadium anymore.
We saw in Houston when fan apathy over owners dismantling of their best players cost the city its Oilers. Colts fans in Baltimore will tell you all about 8 thousand fans going to a home game at memorial stadium, then moving vans appearing in the middle of the night. St. Louis Cardinal football fans who also showed up 10 thousand strong to football games apathetic with Bill Bidwell and his policies until they move to Phoenix.
No that doesnt mean you have to walk on eggshells and not mention firing Lovie Smith, but there is a big difference between the following…
- Lovie Smith risks losing the locker room if Bucs lose to Jags
- Lovie Smith should be Fired if Bucs lose to Jags
A huge difference, the top is sharing your opinion, the bottom is trying to instigate the firing of a Coaches job. This is why I don’t respect your opinions anymore.
Last year you called out the Tampa Two as a dead defense, no one uses the Tampa Two anymore, its all variations created by different coaches who worked it, and based on the personnel you have. Gus Bradley instituted the Tampa Two style in Seattle, then Quinn ran into it. Now he’s spreading it to Atlanta where three of four teams in that division are running it.
Its not a defense that shows results right off the bat. It requires having the right people, and these cast offs from Chicago are NOT the right people. Yes Lovie hand picked them so hopefully the defense can get to a point where its functional, but Lovie has not drafted any players into this defense yet except Kwon Alexander, who is doing quite well.
You either are with Lovie or your against him. You would damn him if he spent the last two draft picks on defense as being the same old Lovie, hasn’t learned his lesson yet its a QB driven league….or you damn him for not having a good enough defense when he’s spent 13 of the 14 draft picks on offense. An offense that is improving every single game we watch them.
I believe the Glazers understand the Big picture, and Lovie Smith is in NO danger or losing his job anytime soon. Next year the Bucs will draft defensive stars of the future, tomorrow’s John Lynch, Ronde Barber, Donnie Abraham or Brian Kelly. But unlike those 90’s/2000’s Bucs this version will have an offense that can put up more than 6 or 9 points in a playoff game.
Or we can fire the coach and start all over before the plan even gets started. Remember, last year was last year…Josh McCown (who is doing quite well with an offensive coordinator) Jeff Tedford, all of those people are gone, as is that season. Stop judging Lovie by last years numbers, or give him credit for what he did in Chicago and St. Louis too.
