Oregon baseball weekly reviews(as of March 22, 2012.)

# 1- Oregon State Beavers.

The Oregon State Beavers baseball team started 2012 as usual, hot out of the gates. The Beavers are 14-5 overall, and a 1st place 3-0 record in the Pac-12. Tyler Smith is amongst the offensive leaders with 25 hits, .446 bat avg, in 56 at bats, and also has added 13 RBI’s to the lineup.

Freshman Michael Conforto, from Washington, leads the team’s overall hitting with a .426 batting average, with 26 hits, and 26 RBI’s in 61 at bats.

The Beavers did well in the Nike College Showcase Baseball Invitational , which was held last week in Corvallis and Eugene. With wins over West Virginia, Oklahoma and Illinois, the team’s R.P.I is skyrocketing.

OSU has won 4 games in a row from the Invitational, and also the 1st series of Pac 12 play this week down in Berkley, California. They swept the Bears in a 3 gamer. Their next upcoming series will start Friday night vs. the Arizona Wildcats at home in Corvallis.

– Portland Pilots

The Pilots have been wreaking havoc in the non –conference, hoping to enter league play Friday morning with The BYU Cougars, with the same hark work and timely hitting/pitching. This will be BYU’s first conference series as a West Coast Conference member.

“We just take it day to day, our goal is to win the WCC each year, we don’t pay attention to the rankings or look ahead” Assistant coach Tucker Brack said in an interview earlier this week.

Portland is 13-3 going into this weekend, with impressive 3 game sweeps over Creighton, and Air Force at home. The team also plays at the beautiful, newly built Helken stadium, at Concordia University-Portland; only when their home games at Joe Etzel Stadium is not in playing playing conditions due to weather. UP also got a big win last Tuesday up in Seattle, fighting off the Washington Huskies 5-2. With conference play starting this Friday at 11 am, I am looking forward to the Pilots and Cougars weekend series to see if the Pilots are for real.

– Oregon Ducks

The Ducks started red hot, and won ten games in a row earlier in the year, with some big time wins over traditional powers like Long Beach State( 3 game sweep) and Vanderbilt, which was also a 3 game sweep. The Vandy series was played in Nashville, TN, meaning that much more for the strength of schedule of the Oregon baseball team.

Oregon and Oregon State University used the pull that UO has with Nike, and created a Nike tournament hosted by both schools. The Nike College Showcase was a good one this year, as the Ducks went 2-2 with wins over last year’s regional opponent UConn Huskies, 4-0 and a 12-0 trouncing of West Virginia.

The losses were close games as the Fighting Illini of Illinois edged the Ducks out 2-1 and a top 25 matchup featuring 17th ranked Oregon vs. 22nd ranked Oklahoma, with the Sooners coming out on top of the squeezing 3-2 loss. Oregon starts Pac 12 play in a Friday-Sunday, 3 game series at PK Park in Eugene against their newest conference foe, the Utah Utes. Oregon follows this weekend’s series with a Tuesday and Wednesday night series in San Marcos, Texas, where the host Texas State Bobcats will take on the Ducks at home.
