With the loss to Stanford arousing concerns about Oregon’s future as a top program, Duck fans can take encouragement in the fact the coaching staff continues to select winners and leaders in recruiting.

Quarterback Morgan Mahalak of Marin Catholic High paced his team to a 49-14 victory over San Marin Saturday, completing a 10-0 regular season for their 5th straight league title. Mahalak passed for 208 yards and ran for 84, accounting for five touchdowns.

The senior quarterback tossed three td passes, 58, 51 and 16 yards. In the third quarter he put the game away with three clutch zone read keepers, busting runs of 16, 11 and 43 yards. For the season, Mahalak has completed 70-105 passes for 2,034 yards, rushed for 343 yards, 6.59 yards a carry. He’s thrown 28 td passes, adding 4 more on the ground. Down in the San Diego area, Royce Freeman and the Imperial Valley Tigers capped a 10-0 regular season and earned a first-round bye with a 62-3 mauling of Palo Verde. Freeman set a San Diego section career scoring record in the game with a 7-yard td run, besting Dillon Baxter’s mark of 697 points. For the game Freeman had 117 yards and two touchdowns.

Jalen Brown and the Mountain Pointe Pride ran their record to a perfect 11-0 by drubbing Boulder Creek 55-7. Brown had 5 catches for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win. For the year he’s reached 45 receptions, 1,026 yards, and 15 tds, averaging 22.8 yards a catch.

In other action, Arrion Springs and Arlington Martin are in the playoffs with an 8-2 record after dispatching Arlington Bowie 48-17 Thursday night, earning a share of the league title. The Martin squad got a big boost mid-week when school officials won a mid-week appeal over an ineligible player, overturning a forfeit of three wins. Terrell Crosby and Green Valley High have also reached the playoffs, 8-2 on the season, 5-0 in league play after blasting Foothill 56-31.
