The Red Sox faced off against the Orioles last night with the presumed Game One starter of the ALDS, Jon Lester verses Wei-Yin Chen for the Orioles. Lester didn't look his best and was only able to go 5 innings, but the Sox still had a chance late. Unfortunately, the O's rallied in the 8th and were able to snag the win.
Lester gave up his first run in the 2nd inning when he gave up an RBI double to Pearce. Lester gave up another run in the 3rd when he gave up a leadoff HR to Roberts. Sox 0-2. In the 4th the Sox got one of those runs back when David Ross hit an RBI single to score Gomes. Sox 1-2. The Sox tied the game up in the 5th when Pedey hit an RBI double to score Drew. Sox 2-2. Unfortunately the game wouldn't stay tied for long. Lester came back out in the 5th and gave up 2 runs to put the O's back on top. Wieters and Valencia both hit RBI singles to have the O's leading 4-2. Lester was done for the night after 5 innings and the rest would be up to the bullpen.
David Ross got the Sox another run in the 6th when he hit an RBI double to score Nava. Sox 3-4. Matt Thornton pitched a scoreless bottom of the inning and then the Sox bats got to work in the 7th. Jonny Gomes hit an RBI single to score Drew that tied the game 4-4. Then Nava hit an single and Pedey ended up scoring on a throwing error. Sox 5-4. Tazawa came to the mound with a lead in the 7th and pitched a scoreless inning. Taz came back out in the 8th, but gave up 2 singles to start the inning and was done in favor of Franklin Morales. Morales ended up giving up a 2 run RBI double to Pearce to have the O's get the lead back 6-5. Morales was done and Workman came in and got the 2 outs the team needed to end the inning. The Sox bats didn't have another rally in their bones in the top of the 9th and took the loss in this game.
The good news is that the A's lost yesterday, so the Sox have officially clinched the best record in the AL. This means that the Sox will be playing the wild card team when the ALDS kicks off.
