Red Sox lost the the Orioles again. Josh Beckett wasn’t able to right the ship. The bullpen once again choked when we needed it most. We lost a series to the Orioles. The Red Sox are just making baseball depressing right now.
Beckett was looking great for a long while until he was in line for the no decision and then in line for the loss. The one guy who really had Beckett’s number was Mark Reynolds. He hit a solo HR against Beckett in the 2nd. In the bottom of the 3rd, Carl Crawford hit a leadoff triple and was knocked in by a Varitek ground out. Game tied 1-1. In the 4th, the Sox took the lead 3-1 on a Crawford RBI double. Looks like those couple games off did Crawford well. In the 5th, the Sox took a 4-1 lead on a David Ortiz RBI single to score Mike Aviles.
In the 6th inning, the Orioles started their process of climbing back into the game. Beckett gave up a single to Andino and then an RBI single to Hardy. Sox lead 4-2. In the 7th, Mark Reynolds got to Josh Beckett again by hitting a 2 run HR to tie the game. Ugh. Beckett came back out in the 8th inning and got himself into a wee bit of trouble. With one out, Beckett had a guy on first and third. Tito pulled Beckett and replaced him with Aceves. Aceves threw a pitch right down main street and Vlad Guerrero hit a 2 run RBI single to have the O’s take the lead 6-4. I can’t hate on Aceves though since he’s been a legit rock star for us all season long. Beckett IMO pitched better than his pitching line indicated. However, he wasn’t able to stop the bleeding like we needed him to. Beckett’s pitching line for the night was 7.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 1 BB and 8 Ks. The Red Sox bats also didn’t really have his back. O’s pitching put down the final 11 batters in order and once the O’s took the lead, the game seemed over. There was no rally in their bones. Other than Crawford and Gonzalez who had good nights at the plate, no one else had anything really going on. We have to do better than that.
The Sox are still 2.5 games up on both the Rays and Angels in the wild card race for now, but if we don’t start winning games, last night will be the last game Fenway this season. The Sox are off on Thursday and head into NYY for 3 games.
