The last time Charlie Manuel was in a baseball dugout was July 2012. Then, the Philadelphia Phillies fired him and made Ryne Sandberg the new manager. Manuel, then rejoined the Phillies as a senior adviser to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.
Even though, Manuel has not been in the dugout for a while now, he is still getting offers from teams such as the Baltimore Orioles. In November, Manuel was approached by the Orioles to become their hitting coach. Manuel initially declined the offer but that hasn’t stopped Baltimore from pursuing the former Phillies manager.
According to Roch Kubato of MASN, the Orioles should know Manuel’s decision by the end of week:
The Orioles are still targeting Charlie Manuel in their search for a new hitting coach, according to sources, and they should know later this week whether he’s willing to fill the position.
Kubato also notes that the Phillies would have to give their permission to the Orioles to interview Manuel. This is an interesting position for Manuel to be in because this is a chance to get back on the field and work with some good young players such as Adam Jones and Manny Machado.
The Orioles unlike the Phillies are contenders now as they were close to going to the World Series this past season. The Phillies, on the other hand, are rebuilding for the future and not contenders.
