After a big weekend on the recruiting trail for the Wisconsin Badgers and head coach Paul Chryst, it was back to getting in on the lesser-known names to help fill up the first class for Chryst.
Badger247 is reporting that two-star offensive tackle Patrick Kasl committed to the Badgers on Monday night. The Forest Lake, Minnesota native earned a scholarship offer after his performance at a Badgers one-day camp a few weeks ago.
Sitting on the offer for a few weeks, Kasl jumped at the chance to join the Badgers. UW was his only Power 5 offer, beating out the likes of Eastern Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, South Dakota State and Yale for his commitment.
The 6-6, 278-pound lineman is the eighth member of Wisconsin’s 2016 class and the first offensive lineman to commit to the program. He is rated the No. 144 offensive tackle in the country and the No. 16 player in the state of Minnesota.
This was a player who many in attendance at the camp were raving about for his physical nature and ability to get off the ball well. His height, weight and footwork could have him projected inside at guard at UW.
More than anything, the film and what we’ve heard from others who have seen him play in person tell us is he is a classic Badger offensive line recruit — he loves to hit hard, stick on blocks and finish with a nasty demeanor.
While the offer list wasn’t great, this staff continues to show that they aren’t afraid to evaluate kids on the merits of what they see in front of them versus the hype of recruiting services. Kasl is another one of those kids Chryst, offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph and others have valued highly.
Kasl’s commitment moved the Badgers’ class to No. 51 nationally and No. 11 in the Big Ten, a slight decrease and only natural given the way recruiting services do their rankings.
