OTF: Morning Box Scores – 4/12/12

Nelson

The Brewers are on a bit of roll early this week, but they aren’t the only team in the organization that’s playing great baseball out of the gate.  The Brevard County Manatees have jumped out early and the question heading into yesterday was if the ‘Tees could get out the brooms for the Lakeland Flying Tigers.

No worries, they accomplished that as they won 5-1 and became the first team in the Brewers organization to do the sweeping.  Brevard County used 2 runs in the second and some great pitching from Jimmy Nelson to come up with the winning margin early, but they tacked on 2 insurance runs in the top of the ninth to really put the game out of reach.  Nelson went 5 innings and gave up just 1 run (earned) on 4 hits and 1 walk.  He struck out eight Flying Tigers in earning his first victory of the season (1-0, 1.80 ERA).

Their low-A mates Wisconsin couldn’t find the winning way though as they lost a narrow 3-2 decision to the Burlington Bees.   The T-Rats opened up the scoring in the top of the 1st inning but they gave up single runs in three of the next four innings and couldn’t cap a comeback after a 5th inning run led to the final score.

Double-A Huntsville dropped their 2nd game in a row to Birmingham with a close 4-2 loss as the Stars moved 3 games under .500 on the early season (2-5).  In fact Huntsville took a 2-1 lead in to the bottom of the 8th inning but the Barons dropped three runs on the Stars to take control of the game.

It wasn’t all bad news down on the farm though as the triple-A Nashville Sounds eeked out just their second win of the season in a 7-6 victory over the Oklahoma City RedHawks.  The teams went all nine innings without deciding a winner, but a Home Run by catcher Martin Maldonado in the top of the 10 inning provided the winning margin for the Sounds.  First baseman Sean Halton went 3-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to five straight games in the victory as well.

Player of the Day: 2B Hainley Statia (Nashville Sounds) – He went 3-for-4 with a double and 3RBI’s in the win over Oklahoma City.  Without his RBI’s the Sounds don’t have a chance for the comeback victory and for that performance he earns our POD honors.
