OTF: Morning Box Scores for 4/15/12

Yesterday the future Brewers put together one of their best all around performances so for this early season as three of the four teams came away victorious.  It wasn’t easy though as two of the games were decided by just one run in favor of the Brewers affiliates, so let’s dive in to who did what and also award our very first Player of the Week award!

Player of the Week (4/8 – 4/14): LF Khris Davis (Huntsville)  – 7 games played: 12-23 (.521avg), 1HR, 6RBI’s, 4 strike outs (12 of his 13 hits this season last week & all 6 of RBI’s as well)

He was our player of the day yesterday and his performance at the plate eeked him out this award over two great pitching performances this week from Chad Pierce (Wisconsin – 7IP, 3H, 4BB, 0R, 0ER, 10K’s, .136BAA, 0.00ERA) and Jed Bradley (6.2IP, 3H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 4K).

Davis

Today we’re going in order of lowest to highest in levels and that means starting things off right in Wisconsin as the Timber Rattlers needed a bottom of the ninth inning run to squeak out a 4-3 victory over the Peoria Chiefs.  The win was the 3rd in a row and allows the T-Rats to close out the series with a sweep this afternoon.

It couldn’t have been more dramatic either as Chiefs relief pitcher Kyler Burke struck out the first two batters up for the T-Rats in the ninth.  Up came Yadiel Rivera next and he hit a single to put Chris Dishon at the plate.  Dishon delivered the game winning walk-off double in to the gap in left center field for the win as Rivera scored from first.

Fond du Lac, WI native Chris Pierce made his first appearance at home in the Brewers organization for the Timber Rattlers yesterday and would’ve come away with the win had Peoria not scored in the top of the ninth inning.  He went 4 innings and gave up only 2 hits and 2 walks with no runs while also striking out 5 batters in relief.

Wisconsin won in dramatic fashion, but High-A Brevard County wasn’t done giving Brewers fans an exciting day as they also scored in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 1-0 victory over the division leading Dunedin Blue Jays.  The win allowed the Manatees to avoid the sweep at the hands of Dunedin and got them closer to them in the standings as well.

Nick Shaw got things off to a good start in the bottom of the ninth as he legged out a double and then was moved over on an attempted sacrifice bunt that turned into an actual hit, so with no outs things looked good.  A shallow pop fly forced Dunedin in to walking the bases loaded to set up a double play.  However the ‘Tees offense had different ideas as Mike Walker hit a deep ball to center field and that scored Shaw for the games only run.

Double-A Huntsville has been locked in a good series with the Birmingham Barons but it wasn’t their day as they dropped a 6-2 decision yesterday.  The Stars drew first in the game, scoring one run in the top of the 1st inning, but they couldn’t muster another run on offense until the top of the ninth and by then it was too little too late.  Starting pitcher R.J. Siedel didn’t exactly have his best outing as he was responsible for 3 runs scored (2 earned) and took the loss to remain winless on the young season.

Amazingly today will be opening day for the Stars as they went a decent 4-6 on their season opening road trip, so it will be interesting how they respond to finally playing in Huntsville this week.

The one team that’s really been struggling are the Nashville Sounds and they finally found themselves on the winning end of a game, taking down the New Orleans Zephyrs 9-5 to even the series at one game a piece.  The victory was the first for the Sounds at home and it was also an offensive output that hasn’t been seen all year so far.  Nashville used a 4 run second inning and a 3 run fourth inning to blow this game wide open.

Player of the Day: RHP Austin Ross (Huntsville) – 5IP, 2H, 1BB, 0R, 0ER, 4K
Really the whole staff from Brevard County deserves a pat on the back for blanking Dunedin, but Ross’ performance was head and shoulders above the others in it’s consistency and numbers.  Despite that he didn’t earn the win, but he gets our daily award nonetheless.
