ThornburgNelson
Last night was a bit of a lighter load down on the farm as Wisconsin’s game against Burlington was postponed due to some very nasty weather involving rain/sleet, high winds, and temperatures in the low 30’s.  But that didn’t damper the results of the rest of the teams as it was a highly anticipated night with Jimmy Nelson (Brevard County), Tyler Thornburg (Huntsville), and Michael Fiers (Nashville) pitching for their respective teams.

Brevard County took down Lakewood 3-0 behind the strength of another great performance from Jimmy Nelson (2-0) who went 7 scoreless innings in earning his 2nd win of the year.  His ERA improved to 1.06 for the season thanks to the shutout.  He was so dominate that he was able to strike out the side (all swining) in his final inning of work.  Nelson’s final line for the night: 7IP, 2H, 0R, 0ER, 7K.  The Manatees got one run in the 1st, 2nd (Miguel Velazquez home run), and 5th innings to help Nelson to the victory.

Tyler Thornburg is perhaps one of the most watched prospects in the Brewers farm system and he was on the mound for the Huntsville Stars to cap off one of the best nights of pitching in the Brewers farm system and he led a 5-2 victory for the Stars.

He took a PERFECT GAME into the 8th inning before a Tennessee Smokies single up the middle broke that up and saw Thornburg off the mound as well.  The final line for his great night: 7.1IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 11K.  His ERA is a paltry 0.98 for the season.  Just how dominating was he?  He threw 98 pitches, 67 of which were for strikes, that’s 68% of his pitches over the plate, and he got 6 of the 11 strikeouts on swinging third strikes.

Offensively the Stars got an unusual source of power off the bat of Scooter Gennett who went 3-for-4, and hit not one, but two 2 run home runs as he was responsible for all but one of the Stars runs in the victory.

Unfortunatly Micheal Fiers couldn’t even come close to replacting the numbers put up by the other pitchers in the system as his nightmare outing saw the Nashville Sounds go down to their 8th defeat of the year in an 11-5 loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs.  In fact he pitched the shortest outing of his professional career, going just 2 1/3 innings and giving up 7 hits and 5 walks that produced 7 runs (6 earned), and 1 home run.  He only struck out 3 Zephyrs batters and just couldn’t get it done when he needed to get out of an inning.

In the losing effort both Logan Schafer and Caleb Gindl had a huge hand in the 5 runs the Sounds produced.  Schafer went 2-4 with 1BB, 2 runs scored, and 2RBI’s.  Gindl went 2-3 with 2 runs scored and 2RBI’s as well, so it wasn’t a totally lost day, at least if you were a Sounds batter.

Player of the Day: This is such a hard one to chose, but it’s a virtual tie so we’re giving the award to Jimmy Nelson… by virtue of his conversational skills on twitter!!  Hey, I’m not above being swayed by athletes conversing back with me 😉  It pays to say hi to fans and journalists alike!!

O.k., really, the award goes to both Nelson and Tyler Thornburg, it’s simply six of one/half dozen of another when comparing their big time peformances.  Congrats to both for great outings and hopefully more of them to come this year!
