Usually this is something you get with your morning bowl of Wheaties or whatever your routine is and I apologize for the lateness of this post, but *cliche time*: It is what it is. So let’s dive in to a not so busy day that saw just three games played thanks to a double header from the Timber Rattlers and postponed games by Huntsville and Nashville respectively.
We’ll start in Appleton, WI where Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium played host to two 7 inning games last night against the Burlington Bees. It was a split night with Burlington winning the made up game from Monday, 5-1 over the T-Rats as Bees pitcher Drew Garnier went a complete game for the visting teams victory.
Wisconsin put their best pitcher on the mound for game two, Drew Gagnon, and he delivered in a 2-0 shutout victory over Burlington. Gagnon pitched into the sixth inning without giving up a run and the shutout was preserved by Seth Harvey. The two runs were scored in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to some clutch hitting and a timely error.
Brandon Macias got off to a good start in the inning by hitting a double and with no outs was sacrificed over to third. With the infield in, Carlos George put one over the short stop who had no play on Macias and made a throwing error to allow George to reach base. He stole 2nd and reached 3rd on a wild pitch from Jonathan Joseph. Once again the Bees drew in the infield to cut off the run scoring chace, but Tyler Roberts nailed a single through that infield and allowed George to score the 2nd run of the inning and the game.
Brevard County featured one of their triplets of Brewers pitching prospects as Jed Bradley was on the mound against the Lakewood Flying Tigers and he helped deliver a series winning 5-0 shutout over the Fyling Tigers. It is the fourth shutout of the season already for the Manatees. Bradley’s victory moved his record to 2-1 on the year and his ERA remains an amazing 0.00. He went 6 scoreless innings today and struck out seven Lakewood batters in getting the victory.
Offensively the ‘Tees broke the game open in the 3rd inning as T.J. Mttelstaedt belted a 2 run triple and then scored on an RBI single from Cody Hawn (2-for-4 on the night) to give them a 3 run third inning and all the run support that Bradley needed. Mittelstaedt’s triple shouldn’t be that surprising though as he leads the Florida State League with a .615 slugging percentage for the season so far. Brevard County tacked on 2 more runs in the seventh inning for the 5-0 margin of victory.
Player of the Day: P Jed Bradley (Brevard County): He has pitched 3 games and 19 total innings of work and has yet to give up a run after his 6IP, 4H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 7K performance against Lakeland yesterday. Also in consideration were Drew Gagnon for his first victory and shutout of the year as well as T.J. Mittelstaedt for his triple, but come on, a pitcher that hasn’t given up an earned run in three starts? How could he not be picked!!
