OTF: Morning Box Scores for 4/20/12

Brandon
The affects of Tuesday’s rain outs in Nashville and Huntsville continued into Thursday as Nashville played a double bill today to make up for that game.  As a result it was another 5 game day down on the Brewers farm.  It was an o.k. day for the system as a whole as they went 2-3 as a group, so how did they get there?

Wisconsin (low-A) took their show and a two game win streak to the Western Michigan Whitecaps.  The T-Rats got off to a fast start as they put up 8 runs in the first two innings off of Western Michigan on their way to an 8-4 victory.  Things got off to a great start as leadoff hitter Chadwin Stang doubled to begin the game and would be part of five straight Rattler batters to reach base and score in a 5 run first inning.  Wisconsin added another 3 runs in the 2nd inning as they got all they needed and hung on from there.  Brandon Macias had a banner night, going 2-for-4 with 4 RBI’s in the victory.  The win is the Rattlers third in a row and first over Western Michigan this year.

At the high-A level the Dunedin Blue Jays continued to dominate the Brevard County Manatees with a narrow 5-4 victory.  On the year Dunedin is 3-1 against the ‘Tees and continue to widen their lead in the Florida State League North division.  It was a battle tonight as Brevard County tied the game up at 4-4 with a two run top of the ninth inning only to see the Jays take the game with a run in their half of the inning.

The Huntsville Stars took a commanding 5-0 lead and hung on for a close 9-7 victory over the Tennessee Smokies to give them a 4-1 series victory and move them a few games over the .500 mark on the season.  After going down 5-0 early on the Smokies battled back to tie things up at 5-5 in the top of the 6th.  Huntsville responded back by scoring 2 runs in the bottom of 7th inning, but the Smokies weren’t done fighting back as they scored another run in the top of the 8th to make it just 7-6 Stars.  Once again the Stars battled back with 2 runs to put them up 9-6 after eight innings.  The Smokies tried to come back and nearly did after scoring a run, but they couldn’t find another two runs as the Stars put the clamps down on them in the final frame for the hard fought win.

Nashville played a twin-bill of seven inning games (per minor league rules) against the Oklahoma City RedHawks.  Unfortunately they couldn’t find a victory in either matchup despite some very interesting baseball in both games going down 4-3 in the first game and in the 2nd game.

Amazingly in game one it was a single run in the first inning that made all the difference as the Sounds and RedHawks matched each other run for run with 2 run third innings and 1 run sixth innings.  Starter Johs Bulter went 5 of the 7 innings, but they weren’t that productive as he struggled with command in giving up 5 hits and 4 walks, while striking out only 3 OKC batters.  His record went to 0-3 and his ERA sits at 4.40 on the year.

In the nightcap they finally got a quality start from a pitcher (Brian Baker), but it was squandered away in a 4-2 loss to the RedHawks.  It was 2-2 going into the final inning, but thanks to an Eric Almonte error in the top of the seventh the inning continued and two runs crossed the plate to allow the RedHawks to make it a sweep of the day.

The losses yesterday made it a four game losing streak.  In fact the Sounds need a win today to avoid the four game sweep at the hands of Oklahoma City.

Player of the Day: 3B Brandon Macias (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers): Any day you make up half of your teams runs in RBI’s you’re doing something right and that’s exactly what Macias did yesterday in a 8-4 Wisconsin victory.  It’s really just that simple for yesterday’s action.
