This afternoon I had the opportunity to go into the TSN 1200 studios and record another episode of ‘Advanced Chats’ — the program hosted by the incomparable Ian Mendes who spends an hour each week discussing Senators hockey with a member of the Senators blogging/online community.
It is a pre-recorded show which means that it will air this upcoming Sunday at 9:00 am, so tune in and support the blogging community and local radio!
When the audio becomes available online, I’ll be sure to post the embedded audio sometime later that day.
Anyways, during this episode, Ian and I devoted a small segment to talking about the upcoming Ottawa Hockey Analytics Conference (#OTTHAC16) that will take place on Saturday, January 16th at Carleton University.
It is the second iteration of the Conference and the event gets under way at 9:00 am. At this point in time, I don’t believe a specific room has been designated for it, but the following individuals have been confirmed to participate:
- Jim Doeden, SportVision
- Marc Appleby, Power Scout Hockey
- Tom Awad, Hockey Abstract and Hockey Prospectus
- Andrew Berkshire, SportLogiq
- Jocelyn Gascon-Giroux, IBM Watson Analytics
- Alex Diaz-Papkovich, Carleton University
- Brian Macdonald, Florida Panthers
- Micah Blake McCurdy, HockeyViz.com
- Kevin Mongeon, Brock University
- Cary Moretti, HockeyTech
- Michael Peterson, Tampa Bay Lightning
- Joshua Pohlkamp-Hartt, Queen’s University
- Luigi Sorbara, Boston Celtics
- Michael Schuckers, St. Lawrence University
- Tim Swartz, Simon Fraser University
- Rob Vollman, Hockey Abstract
- David Wilson, Carleton University
Intriguingly, the Ottawa Senators have recently become one of the event’s major sponsors, so you can be sure that the organization will be represented in some way that the event. So, that’s a good thing!
All in all, it should be a pretty fun day that offers a nice mix bag of information that should be really accessible for every type of hockey fan.
In particular, I’m looking forward to hearing from the panel that will discuss player tracking in hockey featuring reps from HockeyTech, SportVision, SportLogiq, PowerScoutHockey and the Boston Celtics. Since this emerging player/puck tracking technology will inevitably churn out the vast quantities of data, how organizations sift through it and identify the trends, predictive elements and market inefficiencies from the noise will allow them to take advantage and give them a leg up on their competition.
The event’s organizer, Michael Schuckers, asked me to moderate a discussion panel that afternoon, although again, at this point in time, I’m not too sure yet who exactly will be participating in that discussion.
More information pertaining to this year’s event and last year’s event can be found here, but to register for the event, simply follow this link. Organizers are asking for a $20 donation to help cover the costs for hosting and I some social events are organized for the Friday and Saturday nights bookending the Conference.
If you do decide to come to the Conference and you recognize me, feel free to introduce yourself and talk about Alex Chiasson’s unsustainable 0.0-percent even strength shooting percentage. It’s always good to put faces to Twitter handles or names in the comment thread, so don’t be shy.
Hope to see some of you out and don’t forget to listen to TSN 1200 at 9:00 am this Sunday.
