OUCH! What Redskins fans need to know about Dislocated Ankles and AC Joint Sprains

Michael Sam

Redskins players suffered several injuries during the game with Jacksonville. Two of them are of most concern to fans.

Robert Griffin III suffered a dislocated ankle and DeSean Jackson has a sprained AC shoulder. Here are quick links to descriptions of those injuries. Both are found on PhysioAdviser.com.

Dislocated Ankle

“A dislocated ankle is a condition characterized by damage and tearing of the connective tissue surrounding the ankle joint with subsequent displacement of the bones forming the joint so they are no longer situated next to each other.

“Many patients with a dislocated ankle heal well with appropriate physiotherapy and return to normal function. This may take weeks to months to achieve an optimal outcome. However, due to the severity of injury and widespread connective tissue damage associated with this condition, patients may experience long term effects. The most common long term effect of a dislocated ankle is an increased likelihood of future dislocation or ankle sprain with relatively minor trauma.”

The online images found when searching “dislocated ankle” are quite gruesome. The photos of Griffin’s heavily bandaged ankle suggests that he did not suffer the worst of that injury. It did show the characteristic bulge. We will spend the next news cycle debating whether he returns before or after Thanksgiving. For all the concern about taking hits, this injury occurred when he was untouched.

AC Joint Sprain

“An AC joint sprain is a relatively common sporting injury affecting the shoulder and is characterized by tearing of the connective tissue and ligaments of the Acromio-Clavicular joint.”

Mmm, what? An AC shoulder sprain is also known as a Shoulder Separation.

“With appropriate management, most patients with a minor to moderate AC joint sprain can return to sport or normal activity within 2 – 8 weeks. Patients with severe AC joint injuries will usually require a longer period of rehabilitation to gain optimum function.”

These are descriptions, not specific diagnoses of Griffin and Jackson. We  do not know the severity or prognoses for return. Hog Heaven joins all fans hoping for a speedy recovery by both Robert and DeSean.
