Red Sox Nation has been living through a nightmare for almost a year now. We’ve had the biggest choke in MLB history, chicken & beer, the smearing of Francona and Theo, Papelbon leaving, Crawford’s radio silence, losing to the Yankees on the 100th anniversary of Fenway, Dice-K’s continual implosion, the Bard as a starter fiasco, Bailey’s injury, Youk getting shipped out of town, Papi complaining about his paycheck, Middlebrooks breaking his wrist, the death of Johnny Pesky, Beckett’s ERA of 5.19, being 12.5 games behind the Yankees, and now we have the mutiny story. Almost everyone associated with the Red Sox from ownership, management to players has come off looking bad at some point during the last year.
There is more drama to come. Unfortunately, to fix the multitude of problems the franchise is going to have to experience more pain. The Red Sox are not going to make the playoffs this year which will inevitably cause more finger pointing. The likely result will be the firing of Bobby Valentine. Then there is Ortiz’s contract that has to be ironed out. Big Papi will be looking for a multi-year deal and the Sox will just want to offer one year because of his age and most recent injury. History suggests there will be some ungliness as a result of the contract negotiations. Some big name players are going to get traded and Red Sox as we know them will look very different next year.
It is August 15th and Red Sox fans may be waiting for next year but they will have to live through more discomfort to get there.
