The Pirates start their second trip to California this month tonight against the Dodgers. That sucks, but it can’t divert the Pirates from their mission of distancing themselves as much from last week’s disasters as much as possible. The first pitching matchup for this series may pose a problem on that front, though. Brian Burres and Clayton Kershaw take the hill tonight to open this weekend’s four-gamer.
The Pirates have beaten Kershaw once, of course, but Kershaw aided them by walking six, failing to make it out of the fifth inning, and serving up a home run to Garrett Jones. Since then Kershaw’s still giving up a lot of walks, but the Pirates aren’t doing so well at taking many free passes and Jones has just one homer. Burres, meanwhile, has gotten hit pretty hard in two starts and one relief appearance. Time to turn things around? I hope so.

Two straight games where the Pirate starter didn’t factor in to either the Clemente or Cangelosi part of the equation? Unheard of! In yesterday’s win, Andrew McCutchen’s offensive barrage made him the Clemente with DJ Carrasco’s three scoreless innings earning him runner-up honors (Ryan Doumit and Garrett Jones both racked up a huge amount of WPA, too, which comes with the territory in a game that swung as many times as yesterday’s did). Most people singled out the torrid Andy LaRoche, though, so no one picked up points. Lastings Milledge and Ronny Cedeno were a combined 1-for-11; they’re your Cangelosis.
