Overtime Wasn’t Enough as Celtics Fall to Trail Blazers

For the first time in what seems like a long time, the Celtics lost their second consecutive game at home. The Celtics looked like a high school team against the Knicks on Wednesday, so there were hopes for improvement tonight. The Portland Trail Blazers were losers of their last four games but were able to find the win column as they took down the Celtics 127-123 in overtime.

Make no mistake, this is now two bad losses for the Celtics in a row. The Knicks are one of the worst teams in the league and the the Trail Blazers just lost to the (recently) hot 76ers just last night. These were two games the Celtics had needed to win, and most definitely should have won. If Boston keeps this up, they will be contested heavily by Atlanta to be the #3 team in the Eastern Conference.

Isaiah Thomas was able to put on a show on offense once again as he dropped a game-high 41 points. The next closest for the Celtics were Horford and Smart, who each picked up 17 points. The Celtics have been able to rely on the fourth quarter magic that Thomas has produced, but they cannot depend on it each and every night. Thomas was able to score, but the other starters on the court weren’t able to help him out. It’s always going to be tough to win any game when there is only one player who is producing at such a high level.

The Celtics were able to win the battle in terms of rebounds as they came away with 47 to Portland’s 37. The shooting percentages show that this game was close for the majority of the time, as Boston shot 45.7% from the field while Portland made 46.7%. If the Celtics want to become a top tier team in the league as a whole, they must improve against inferior teams.

In the end, the Celtics made some clutch shots from deep. Terry Rozier was able to score 15 off the bench and put down the game-tying 3-pointer to send the game into OT.

The Celtics will get a few days of rest and will have the opportunity to work on what has been doing them wrong as of the last few days. We will find out if that work pays off come Tuesday night when the Celtics travel to Washington.

PS: The grey alternative jerseys have got to go. Ugly to look at.
