What? Is it almost time for training camp?
The Indiana Pacers, looking pretty after their stellar offseason haul, re-signing their rock, David West, and getting rid of DJ Augustin, Tyler Hansbrough, Gerald Green, Miles Plumlee and Jeff Pendergraph in exchange for CJ Watson, Luis Scola, Chris Copeland, Donald Sloan and Solomon Gill. Oh, and Danny Granger is back, and he will apparently be close to, if not, 100%
The team looks pretty stacked, but with 13 men on the roster, they had 2 more spots. And with one of those spots they signed swingman Rasual Butler, a 6-7 journeyman who has a decent outside shot and spent some time with the Pacers' D-League affiliate last season. He's a familiar name to me as he has played in Toronto, Miami, New Orleans, LA (Clippers) and Chicago over his 10 year career.
But why did the Pacers sign him? Most people are wondering because the Pacers already have an abundance of wing players and a big body would have been more logical. My guess, considering it is a non-guaranteed contract, is for him to provide a body in training camp. If he exceeds expectations and performs well, he can be an insurance contract at the end of the bench in case something happens to someone.
