Closer Jonathan Papelbon got his wish… He’s been traded to a contender, the Washington Nationals.
The deal was in negotiations for a couple of days for a few reasons.
1. Papelbon wanted to be the closer and Washington has a pretty good one in Drew Storen, but the Nats gave in.
2. He wanted to have his vesting option for next year and he got that wish as he is now signed through next season. He is taking less money though by going to Washington.
The Phils received RHP Nick Pivetta, who is 22.He was great in single A going 7-4 with a 2.29 ERA, but has struggled in double A going 0-2 with an ERA over 7.
Papelbon is 17-17 in save opportunities this year and has a 1.59 ERA. I think the Phillies and us fans along with Papelbon are all happy to part ways, but we will see him plenty in the division. He may be the Phillies all time save leader but he never saw himself as a Phillie and the fans will tell you the same.
Ken Giles took over the closer role for the Phillies and he got the save tonight.
