It has been reported, however not officially confirmed that Papelbon has reached a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies were on the verge of signing Ryan Madson for 4 yrs/44 million when word came that the deal fell threw. Suddenly the Phillies were talking with Papelbon again and then word came through twitter this afternoon that Pap and the Phils came to a deal. The report is that the deal is 4 yrs/close to 50 million, with a vesting option for a 5th year.
While I would have made resigning Pap a priority if I was the GM, if the Phils were willing to go to 5 years with Papelbon then the Sox had no choice but to let Pap go. The Phils will be overpaying Pap in the long term, but they might just get a World Series closer in the short term.
