The Sox needed the win this afternoon in order to salvage the series before heading out of town to the Bronx. The Sox had Jake Peavy on the mound vs. Robbie Ross for the Rangers. Peavy would once again pitch well, but the game would come down to the late innings and Papi’s clutch bat to bring the win to the Sox.
Much of the game was a very low scoring game. Both starting pitchers were dealing and it looked like it wouldn’t take much to have this game go one way or the other. The Sox got the first run of the game in the 3rd inning when Pedey reached on an infield single and then Bradley Jr was able to score because of a throwing error by the Rangers’ pitcher. Sox 1-0. Peavy kept the score 1-0 until the 7th inning when he allowed the Rangers to tie the game. Peavy gave up a leadoff HR to Moreland to have the game 1-1. With 2 outs in the 7th inning John Farrell came out to get him and Tazawa was in the game. Taz gave up a single, but then got the 3rd out to get out of the inning. Peavy’s pitching line for the night was 109 pitches, 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 BB and 8Ks. Peavy didn’t get the win, but he sure he did job this afternoon.
Andrew Miller came in and pitched the 8th inning for the Sox. Miller gave up a sac fly to Rios and suddenly the Sox were down 1-2. However Miller quickly went from being in line for the loss to being in line for the win. In the bottom of the 8th with 2 batters on David Ortiz came to the plate. Ron Washington decided to go with Cotts to face Papi since Papi was 0 for 5 against him. Ortiz would change that stat in his favor when he hit a towering HR over the Pesky Pole. Sox 4-2. The Rangers had the play reviewed, but it happily remained a homerun. Koji Uehara came in for the 9th and threw an 11 pitch inning to grab the save and the win.
Red Sox 4 Rangers 2 BOXSCORE
WP: Miller (1-0) LP: Ogando (0-1) SV: Uehara (2)
