Papi Clutch Homer Gives Sox a Much Needed Win!

The Red Sox were sitting on a 5 game losing streak and hoped that John Lackey could be the stopper and give the team their first win against Detroit in 2014.  In addition to Lackey, the Sox lineup also had an extra punch with Napoli being activated from the DL.  Lackey pitched well and Napoli homered in his first game back, but the hero was Papi with a clutch go ahead homer in the 9th to bring the Sox to victory.

The Sox grabbed the first run of the game in the 3rd inning when Pedey hit a sac fly to score Bradley Jr.  Sox 1-0.  The Tigers were able to tie it up in the bottom of the inning when Suarez hit an RBI single to score Jackson.  Sox 1-1.  That lead did not last for long.  In the 4th the Tigers were able to go ahead when VMart hit an RBI single to score Cabrera.  Sox 1-2.  The Sox were able to tie the game up in the 6th when Napoli returned with a homerun to right.  Sox 2-2.

Lackey ended up giving the Tigers the go ahead run in the bottom of the 7th when Suarez hit an RBI single, but he was luckily able to get out of the inning with a double play to not allow any other runs to score.  Lackey pitched 8 strong innings and looked like he was going to be in line for another loss.  The Sox offense took to the plate in the 9th against old foe Joba Chamberlain.  Chamberlain was in the closer role since Joe Nathan was not available.  Brock Holt continued his hot streak and got a single before Pedey walked.  With one out and two runners on, David Ortiz came to the plate.  Papi said later he was waiting for the slider and when he got it, he hit it out of the park for a go ahead 3 run homer.  Sox 5-3.  Koji Uehara came into the game in the bottom of the 9th and had his usual dominant 1-2-3 inning.  Sox snapped their 5 game winning streak and they did it in dramatic fashion.
