Papi Homers Twice in Win Over Astros

The Red Sox came off an extra innings loss the night before and had rookie pitcher Rubby De La Rosa on the mound.  De La Rosa struggled through his outing and wasn’t able to make it to the 5th inning, but the Sox offense lead by David Ortiz took care of bringing the win for the home team.

De La Rosa gave up 2 early runs in the 1st inning to immediately put the offense in a hole.  De La Rosa gave up an RBI single to Fowler and then an RBI groundout to Singleton.  De La Rosa gave up another run in the 2nd when Carter hit a sac fly to score Gonzalez.  Sox 0-3.  In the bottom of the 2nd the Sox were able to get one of those runs back when Nava hit an RBI double to score Napoli.  Sox 1-3.  However the Astros got that run back and then some when Petit hit a 2 run RBI double off of De La Rosa in the 3rd.  Sox 1-5.

The game was feeling pretty hopeless, but then David Ortiz stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 3rd and hit a 2 run bomb to center to bring the Sox within 2 runs.  That homer was Papi’s 400th homerun in a Sox uniform.  Sox 3-5.  The Astros got the lead back to 3 runs in the 4th when Chris Carter hit a solo homerun off of De La Rosa.  That would be the last inning for Rubby and the rest of the game would be up to the Sox offense and the bullpen.

Alex Wilson would take the mound in the 5th and would be exactly what the Sox needed.  Wilson pitched a scoreless 5th and then the Sox offense really went to work.  David Ortiz came to the plate again and again hit a 2 run homerun.  The Sox were within a run and the inning was still cooking.  The Sox tied the game when Nava hit an RBI single to score Cespedes and then took the lead when Bradley Jr hit a sac fly to bring Napoli home.  Sox 7-6.  Wilson pitched a scoreless 6th and even got one out in the 7th before his outing was over.  Wilson faced 7 batters and retired every single one of them.  Wilson was in the line for the win and no one could have deserved it more.  Layne took the mound in the 7th and ended up allowing 2 baserunners without recording an out before Farrell went to Burke Badenhop.  Badenhop got the 2 outs we needed and also pitched a scoreless 8th inning.  In the bottom of the inning the Sox bats got some much needed insurance runs.  David Ortiz came to the plate and this time he did not hit a homerun, but he still hit a 2 RBI double to put the Sox up 3 runs.  Ortiz had 6 RBI on the night and basically carried the Sox to victory on his back.  Cespedes hit an RBI single to have the Sox leading 10-6.  Koji Uehara took to the mound in the 9th and while he struggled the most I have seen him in months, he had 4 runs to play with.  Koji gave up a solo homerun to Castro, but that would be the limit to the damage.  The Sox got the win and Papi was the hero!
