The Sox are playing a doubleheader (weather permitting) with the Tigers today before heading back to Boston. Clay Buchholz took the mound hoping to continue the Sox winning ways and bring the team their 5th straight win. Clay seemed to be well on his way to another W until he hit the 4th inning. The offense gave him a 3-0 lead with a manufactured run by Ellsbury in the 1st inning, a HR by Mike Cameron in the 2nd inning and another HR by Pedroia in the 3rd inning.
Clay first found trouble in the 4th inning. He gave up a solo HR to Andy Dirks in the 4th, but limited the damage to that. Clay’s pitch count started to rise and it just looked like things were unraveling. In the 6th inning, Clay gave up a crushing HR to Brennan Boesch, a double to Miguel Cabrera and then a single to Jhonny Peralta to leave the game tied 3-3. The Sox trainer came out in the 6th and checked on Clay, but left him in the game. There was no official word on what they were checking on, but some speculation that it might have been a blister on his hand. Whatever was going on, Clay ended the game not pitching nearly as well as he started it.
The Sox brought Matt Albers in to pitch the 7th and 8th innings and he was able to keep the Tigers at bay. In the top of the 9th, the Sox sent out David Ortiz to pinch hit against the Tigers’ closer Jose Valverde. Papi hit a CLUTCH HR to give the Sox a 4-3 lead. Papelbon took the mound in the bottom of the 9th and had himself a nice 1-2-3 inning to get the save and the win!
See y’all again tonight at 7pm!
