The story of the day was supposed to be Tim Lincecum verses Jon Lester in a pitching duel. Well, Jon Lester kept up his part of the bargain. Lester threw a 103 pitch complete game to beat the Giants 5-1. Papi hit a solo homerun off Lincecum in the 1st inning that was deposited in McCovey Cove. Thing of beauty. Jonny Lester hit a long long long sac fly in the 2nd inning…that in any other ballpark would be a grand slam homerun. Lincecum left the game after the 3rd inning with the Giants in a 4-1 hole. The Sox didn’t get back on the scoreboard until the 9th inning when Beltre smacked a homerun to give the Sox the 5-1. JD Drew took his life in his hands and touched the top of Beltre’s head in VMart’s absence. You heard me. VMart’s absence. VMart was hit by a foul tip in the second inning. He walked it off and seemed to be ok. You can watch video of it here. We learned later the ball also hit him in off his left thumb. VMart left the game in the 4th inning and now we learned he fractured his left thumb. Fractured. Left. Thumb. Gah. VMart said he hopes to not go on the DL, but we’ll see. The good news on the injury front (is there any??)…is that JD Drew was in the lineup in RF. He smoked a triple and his hammy looked A OK when he was trucking around the bases. Phew.
Sox WIN 5-1. BOXSCORE
