Parker: Spurs ready for championship run

Tony ParkerThe San Antonio Spurs seem to be rolling at the right time, having won their last 11 games and 28 of their last 33.

That kind of success breeds confidence and Spurs guard Tony Parker talked about his confidence in the Spurs with just 12 games remaining before the playoffs start.

On his French radio show, Parker said the Spurs have what it takes to win their fifth NBA championship.

“We are first in the West and we are playing great basketball right now. We have just won 11 games in row. That’s a difficult thing to do in the NBA. I think we have everything needed to win a championship. We only need to avoid injuries and continue in the same direction…”

While injuries have been detrimental to the Spurs in the past, and especially in last season’s first round playoff exit against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Spurs now have the depth needed to make up for any missed games.

While losing a member of the big three would be an enormous loss, the Spurs’ new additions and the emergence of Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green and Tiago Splitter would definitely soften that blow.

One such new addition is Parker’s childhood friend and French national team teammate, Boris Diaw.

“Boris is playing really well. It’s great to be with him on the court. I never thought that one day we would be both starting on one of the best NBA teams. We know each other since we were kids, we learned how to play basketball together. He’s really a great add for the team.”

Parker and the Spurs will be in Salt Lake City tonight to try to extend their streak. While they’ll likely drop a few games in the last few games of the season in attempt to have fresh players at the start of the playoffs, the Spurs do look primed for a late playoff push and seem to have one of the best rosters from 1-12 that they have had in recent history.
