Manny Parra finally got his opportunity to rejoin the Brewers’ rotation Tuesday afternoon against the first-place Cincinnati Reds. And Parra delivered.
Parra went just four innings–intentionally cut short as Parra hasn’t been “stretched out” with long pitch counts as a starter, plus Manny also just pitched Friday night, giving him only three days rest–but only gave up 1 ER, 4 hits, and 3 BB’s on 84 pitches (48 of which were strikes). Parra fanned three.
Parra gave way to Marco Estrada, called up Tuesday morning just hours before the first pitch, for the sole purpose of spelling Parra. Estrada, claimed off waivers from the Nationals in the off-season, made his debut with the Brewers, after posting an impressive 1-2, 3.15 ERA and 1.03 WHIP for Nashville this year. Estrada had fanned 33 versus 11 BB’s for the Sounds.
But how would he do against the Reds? Estrada also went four innings (hey, I finally got the “piggyback” scenario I was wishing for), also allowed just 1 ER. but only 2 hits, 4 K’s and no walks. Estrada threw 55 pitches; 37 were strikes.
Either Parra and/or Estrada will be needed as a 5th starter on Sunday against the Twins…as both pitched like “starters,” there is a fair chance both will be saved until then…unless the other starters continue to only last 4-5 innings and the bullpen gets taxed again.
