Part 2: Wolves trade Mayo for Love

The Minnesota Timberwolves tonight acquired the draft rights to 6-10 forward Kevin Love,
the fifth overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, and 6-8 guard/forward
Mike Miller in an eight-player trade that sent the draft rights to O.J.
Mayo, the third overall draft pick, to Memphis. As part of the deal,
the Wolves also acquired forward Brian Cardinal and center Jason
Collins from the Grizzlies, with Memphis receiving guards Marko Jaric
and Greg Buckner, and forward Antoine Walker.

From Britt Robson’s/On The Ball live blog of the evening:
11:43: Okay, Mayo is being traded to Memphis for Kevin
Love! In addition the Grizz are almost totally clearing the useless
contracts on the Wolves, taking Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker and Greg
Buckner. In addition to Love, the Wolves are getting Mike Miller, Brian
Cardinal and Jason Collins. ESPN is reporting it, we don’t have
confirmation yet, but that’s got to be the reason we haven’t seen
McHale.

Jaric’s contract — three years remaining, $21 million total — is gone
and the Wolves got Cardinal’s two-year, $13 million contract back. Also
gone is an unhappy Walker, who didn’t play a minute after mid February
last season.

The Wolves now have two players they intend will stretch the defense and give Al Jefferson freedom inside.

Memphis called Minnesota and proposed the deal after the Grizzlies acquired Arthur.

Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale said
he thought the deal was dead early in the night, but the Grizzlies
reopened negotiations as the first round came to a close, and Memphis
finally relented and included Miller in the transaction.

"Actually no one was more surprised than we were when the deal came
back," McHale said. "We were all sitting around there looking at each
other saying, ‘Wow, I guess it’s back on.’ There were just too many
components in it that fit our needs not to do it."

The deal allows the Timberwolves to dump Walker, who was unhappy riding
the bench on a rebuilding team, and Jaric’s contract, which has three
years and more than $21 million remaining.
