In case you haven’t heard the news, Blackhawks forward and former No. 1 overall pick, Patrick Kane, was arrested early Sunday morning for allegedly assaulting a cab driver.
According to ESPN.com, who jumped all over this report:
“The 20-year-old Kane and his cousin, James M. Kane, 21, were taken into police custody at about 5 a.m. ET after allegedly punching the driver and taking $15 in fare they had given him after he said he didn’t have 20 cents in change, a police report says.
The driver said his glasses were broken as he was hit in the face and head and grabbed by the throat, according to the report.”
Apparently the fare was $13.80, so they wanted to tip the guy a generous 7% and when he didn’t have 20 cents in change the Kanes decided to go UFC on the guy and took all of the money back. That seems pretty normal to me considering they were probably watching UFC earlier in the night. And just to show you how meaningful it is for cab drivers to carry the correct change when they drive people around, Kane signed a 3-year deal in 2007 which was the maximum for rookies — allowing him to earn up to $850,000 in ‘A’ bonuses and $2 million in ‘B’ bonuses for a total of $3.725 million annually. In addition, on Thursday Kane provided funding for a new ice rink in his hometown. That 20 cents was important to Kane — the cab driver should have had his 20 cents.
Now, for what it’s worth, I used to give Patrick Kane a lift home in high school when he spent a couple years in Detroit. He was only 14-years old at the time, but he was always quiet and reserved. I never took any chances, though — I always had proper change up front in the drink holder. There’s a valuable lesson to be learned in all of this, Mr. Buffalo Cab Driver.
Meanwhile, Patrick, keep following the Mens Sana in Corpore Sano or ‘Sound Mind in a Sound Body.’
