Good evening, Patriots fans (or most probably good morning since most of you might be reading this Tuesday morning). Well…I’m at a loss for words. What actually happened to the Patriots tonight in Kansas City? I for one did predict New England to get beaten by the Chiefs considering it was a road game and their crowd is very hostile. But neither you nor I expected the Patriots to get blown out like this. I’m not sure if this is the worst blowout in Patriots history but it’s certainly the worst I’ve seen. After tonight, we all have a ton of doubts that need to be answered.
The first half was literally all Chiefs. I literally saw nothing positive from either the Patriots offense or the Patriots defense. On the other hand, the Chiefs’ defense was playing strong (a big part of that was due to their crowd – who set a world record for loudest stadium again. Seattle will beat that soon.) and their offense never looked back. Kansas City’s 303 yards were just too strong for New England’s 96. In those 303 yards included two Jamaal Charles touchdown runs (it was his first game back too) and one field goal from Cairo Santos as time expired (interesting fact about Santos: He was actually born and raised in Brazil and didn’t know what our football was until he came here as a foreign exchange student. Pretty good kicker, I must say!). Oh by the way, those 303 yards allowed were the most allowed by the Pats in the first half in the Bill Belichick era. Not good at all, but they were lucky that they were only down 17-0.
You would think Belichick told something to the guys in the locker room during halftime. Nope. Or wait, maybe he did…but the Patriots still couldn’t do a thing. Charles got another touchdown for Kansas City, Brady kept turning the ball over, Santos added another field goal for the Chiefs, and the defense just kept failing to make simple tackles by continuously slipping on the field. Tom Brady did throw a touchdown pass to Brandon LaFell but the Chiefs responded back with Alex Smith finding Travis Kelce wide open in the end zone. Soon after that, Brady got pick-6’d by Husain Abdullah – that would be it for Brady. As soon as Jimmy Garoppolo came in, the Patriots offense suddenly looked better. Jimmy G found Rob Gronkowski for a touchdown (that’s Jimmy G’s first ever NFL regular season touchdown). But it was too little by then because New England was already being blown out. That would basically be it. In a huge mismatch of a game, your final score: New England Patriots 14 – Kansas City Chiefs 41. Brutal.
Honestly, I want to forget this game, other Patriots fans want to forget this game, and the Patriots players want to forget this game. But they can’t. Why? Look at who the Patriots play next week – the undefeated, scary Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday night (great…another prime time game). Sure, it’s a home game but this Bengals team is legit. The fact that the Pats have struggled against Miami, Oakland, and Kansas City, you have to be a little nervous now. My role is to write game recaps, but I’m extremely frustrated. I really thought the Patriots would put a better effort in KC tonight but the offensive line was trash, Brady was trash, actually…everything about the Patriots was trash. On an important Monday Night Football game, they decided to put forth a trash effort. Kudos to the Chiefs for doing the exact opposite. I haven’t lost faith yet but New England really needs to stop playing around. Let’s go Patriots.
