Paul Heyman is, without a doubt, the wrestling world’s most New York of New Yorkers. So, it would make sense that the outspoken mouthpiece for Brock Lesnar would reference his beloved Yankees when discussing the talent in the WWE, right?
When asked recently by wrestling podcaster Sam Roberts who, if anyone, from NXT (WWE’s developmental system) he would pick as the next big thing to get behind…he gave a convoluted answer.
But I think I know what he meant.
“If I were Hank Steinbrenner and I fired Brian Cashman and put Paul Heyman in charge of the New York Yankees they’d be a much better team,” Heyman said. “My first move would have been to get rid of Derek Jeter, as unpopular as that would have been a few years ago, and get rid of A-Rod, which would have been very popular a few years ago. And the reason why is because A-Rod had hit 600 home runs, but he wasn’t going to hit 600 more. My reasoning was…go get a bunch of 21, 22 and 23 year-olds for the Yankees and spend five years building the team. Then you’ll have a bunch of 27 and 28 year-olds on your team (and) you’ll have ten years of a dynasty.”
Makes sense.
So, basically, even though they had no players of the same caliber of Jeter of Rodrigues, Heyman was suggesting he would have done to the Yankees what Jeffrey Luhnow did to the Houston Astros a couple of years ago.
It remains to be seen if Houston is a dynasty in the making, but given they’ve been sitting atop the American League West standings for nearly all of this season…they’re doing something right.
