Just a quick update on the UConn women’s basketball team. I forgot to mention this in yesterday’s Paw Prints.
With Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt deciding that she no longer wanted to play UConn, Geno Auriemma needed another big name school to add to his schedule. Well he didn’t have to look to far as his friend with the WBCA, Sherri Coale.
She is the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners women’s basketball team and she has agreed to play UConn for at least the next four years. They will begin playing at UConn next year.
“We’d been approached to play them in the preseason this year and couldn’t work it out,” Auriemma said. “I’ve always left it in their hands. I told Sherri and the people at Oklahoma that if they want to play we are more than willing to. The kind of team and program they well, it’s a natural for us to play.
“But we both want to challenge our programs and I know Sherri feels she has a point to prove. I’m sure we’ll have some fun and games until Sherri wins four straight for the first time. When that happens, I don’t think I’ll be a barrel of laughs.”
I think this is the right move for UConn. Oklahoma is definitely a team on the rise and playing UConn will help both schools out in the long run.
