The Red Sox came into the game last night with a 2-1 lead in the series with Jake Peavy on the mound hoping to go up 3-1 by the end of the night. Every game has been a pitching duel so far, but unfortunately for the Sox it would not be last night. Peavy got into trouble early and put the Sox in a big hole they were unable to crawl out of.
Jake Peavy had a quick first inning, but his 2nd inning would be his undoing. Peavy got the bases loaded with no outs and wouldn't get out of the inning until he had given up 5 runs. The first run was scored when Peavy walked Jackson with the bases loaded. Peavy then gave up a sac grounder to Iglesias followed by a 2 run RBI double to Hunter. The inning was finished off by Cabrera hitting an RBI single to score Hunter. Sox 0-5. Gulp. In the 4th the troubles continued for Peavy. He gave up an RBI single to Jackson to have the Tigers leading 6-0. Peavy was done for the night and Brandon Workman was in the game. Workman gave up an RBI single to Cabrera to have the Sox in a 0-7 hole. Brandon Workman came back out and pitched a scoreless 5th to at least keep the damage there.
In the 6th inning the Sox were finally able to crack the scoreboard. Salty hit an RBI single to score Napoli. Sox 1-7. Ryan Dempster came out in the 6th and pitched himself a scoreless inning as well. In the 7th, Fister was out of the game and the Sox were able to get a run from the Tigers bullpen. Victorino got an RBI double to score Ellsbury from first. Sox 2-7. Frank Morales came out and pitched a scoreless 7th inning and then Felix Doubront pitched a scoreless 8th inning. While Peavy was a disappointment and didn't get the job done, the Sox bullpen has continued to do their job inning after inning. In the 9th the Tigers brought their closer to the mound even though they had a 5 run lead. This was a must win game for them. The Sox continued to have luck against Benoit, just not enough of it. Bogaerts hit a double and then Ells hit an RBI triple to bring him home. That would be all the Sox would get and they would fall 7-3.
Red Sox 3 Tigers 7 BOXSCORE Series tied 2-2.
WP: Fister (1-0) LP: Peavy (0-1)
