The Red Sox really needed a strong pitching performance from Jake Peavy to have a chance to not be swept up by the red hot Tigers. Unfortunately Peavy wasn’t crisp and the Sox offense faltered once again, so the Tigers came away from the series with a sweep.
The Red Sox were able to score first when Bogaerts hit an RBI single to score Sizemore in the 2nd inning, but that lead did not last for long. Peavy would end up giving up 3 runs in the top of the 3rd when Miguel Cabrera hit an RBI single and then former Sox Victor Martinez hit a 2 run homerun. Sox 1-3. The Tigers grabbed another run in the 5th when Cabrera hit a sac fly RBI to score Kinsler. Sox 1-4. In the bottom of the inning the Sox were able to get that run back when Napoli hit into what could have been a groundout or even a double play, but 3rd basemen Kelly came home with it and Avila couldn’t hold on to the ball and Pedey was safe. Sox 2-4. Avila made up for that in the 6th though and hit an RBI single to score Jackson. Sox 2-5.
Peavy was done after 6 innings and his pitching line was 92 pitches, 6 IP, 11 H, 5 R, 0 BB and 2 Ks. Junichi Tazawa came into the game in the 7th and didn’t have a great showing. Tazawa gave up a no doubt, towering HR to Torii Hunter. Sox 2-6. Andrew Miller came out and pitched a scoreless 8th inning which was a nice rebound for him after a couple rough outing in Minnesota. Burke Badenhop got 2 outs in the 9th before Craig Breslow came in for the final out. Unfortunately the Sox were unable to get anything going against the Tigers bullpen and they won the game and the series easily.
Red Sox 2 Tigers 6 BOXSCORE
