Pedro, Manny, and El Tiante

Pedro Martinez took a shot at Josh Beckett’s conditioning when speaking to the media at a charity benefit over the weekend:

“He’s not totally healthy, he’s not in good condition.  I know Beckett. It’s easier for him to pitch when he’s healthy. I know his mechanics, too…He’s leaning back a little bit, his lower back is probably barking a little bit and this” — Martinez grabbed his own belly — “is blowing up on him, and that cannot happen.”

Manny Ramirez wants to “unretire” but there is that 100 game steroid suspension he has to deal with.  He has changed agents and is working with the MLBPA to get the suspension reduced to 50 games since he missed most of last season.  Even with the reduced suspension there may not be many teams willing to take the risk of bringing Manny on board.

Luis Tiant gets another change to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame.  The “Golden Era” Committee meets today to reconsider his case.  He was passed over by the Baseball Writers Association for the 15 years he was eligable.
