We all know that David Ortiz is doing his very best to get Jon Lester back to Boston, but he’s not the only one dreaming of a reunion with the lefty…Pedro Martinez has now joined the club.
Memo to Red Sox ownership…you’ve got your entire fan base, your biggest star and one of the best pitchers of our generation saying you should re-sign Lester. What more do you need? A sign from God?!?
“I think having ‘a Lester’ — which I think there’s only one — is probably the biggest move the Red Sox should be doing,” Martinez said Friday.
The biggest move? Bigger than Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval?!?
You bet it is.
After the trade deadline, the Boston rotation was held together with duct tape and glue. By the end of the season, the rotation bore a close resemblance to Sylvester Stallone’s face in the end of every “Rocky” movie. The Red Sox ended the season with a team ERA of 4.01 while allowing 715 runs. By comparison, they allowed 656 runs back in 2013.
Needless to say, the Red Sox had one job to do this offseason…and so far they have yet to do it.
It’s not just getting any pitcher, it’s about getting the best on the market right now. Don’t agree with that statement? Then just ask Martinez.
“You just look at track records,” the future Hall of Famer added. “Lester, if you ask me, mechanically solid, fundamentally solid, pitches with no stress, doesn’t look like he breaks a sweat, hard worker, dedicated, good in the clubhouse. All those things add up to the value of one single player. I think Lester supplies all that.”
If the Sox don’t get Lester I’ll be pretty upset. If they don’t dramatically improve the rotation though then I’ll be royally pissed.
