Last year Dustin Pedroia played through a thumb injury that would have put most players on the sidelines, so when he was scratched from Sunday’s lineup and sent back to Boston to meet with the team doctors, it is of course concerning. It was reported that Pedroia has been suffering with wrist soreness since he injured it trying to complete a double play in the home opener against the Brewers on April 4th. Pedroia has been playing with the injury, but during batting practice the soreness continued and increased in severity.
The injury bug has definitely hit the Sox early and often this season. Shane Victorino has yet to make his 2014 debut due to an injury he sustained in his last spring training game. Will Middlebrooks is on the shelf with a strain that looks like it could keep him out of the lineup longer than the 15 Day DL. Koji Uehara has been experiencing shoulder tightness and could be out for a few days or a lot longer. The Sox need to be able to field a quality lineup and right now that is deeming difficult to do with the injuries they are facing. Losing Victorino, Middlebrooks and Uehara was tough, however if they lose Pedey for an extended period of time, that might be a gut punch that the team has a hard time recovering from. Pedey is not only a high level player, but also the heart of the team and often referred to as the unspoken Captain of the team.
I’ll be crossing my fingers and toes and waiting on baited breath until we hear back from the Sox’s doctors.
