Penn State’s successful season is starting to pay off on the recruiting trail as James Franklin and his staff were able to pull two speedy recruits out of the state of Michigan this week.
K.J Hamler
The first recruit reeled in was 4 star wide receiver K.J. Hamler, who chose the Nittany Lions over Michigan State and Oregon on Friday December 9th. Hamler is from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s in Michigan, but had been down at IMG Academy in Florida. Unfortunately, Hamler never got to see the field for IMG this year as he suffered an ACL injury. At 5’9 and 156 pounds, Hamler is not the biggest target in the world, but what caught the attention of 26 programs was his speed. Hamler was last clocked at 4.43 for his 40 time. This speed will allow him to play slot receiver and be a dangerous return man for the Nittany Lions. The ACL injury is not expected to affect his running ability and he is expected to make a full recovery. Hamler plans to enroll early at Penn State so he will officially be a member of the program in January.
Donovan Johnson
The latest pick-up occurred Tuesday night as Franklin received good news from Detroit Michigan 4 star cornerback Donovan Johnson. Johnson chose Penn State over Virginia Tech. Like Hamler, Johnson is from Michigan and his blazing speed makes him an intriguing prospect. At this past Summer’s “The Opening”, which is a skills competition for top recruits, Johnson was clocked having the fastest shuttle time among all attendees, that’s very impressive. The 5’10 179 pound prospect just capped off his senior year at Cass Tech with a state championship.
The addition of both Hamler and Johnson brings Penn State’s recruit tally in the 2017 cycle to 17. The class now ranks 15th nationally according to 247 Sports.
Penn State hopes to cap off this big recruiting week with a bang as the Nittany Lions top target, cornerback Lamont Wade, is expected to announce his decision on Saturday at noon.
