Penn State DE Carl Nassib named semifinalist for Bednarik Award

No school has more Chuck Bednarik Award winners than Penn State, and no matter what happens this season that fact will not change. Defensive end Carl Nassib is hoping to provide a little bit more of a cushion for Penn State though. Nassib was named a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award earlier today by the Maxwell Football Club. Nassib was the only Penn State player to receive semifinalist consideration for either of the Maxwell Football CLub’s top individual awards.

Nassib is one of five Big Ten players named as a Bednarik Award semifinalist. Ohio State’s Joey Bosa, Michigan State’s Shilique Calhoun, Michigan’s Jourdan Lewis and Wisconsin’s Joe Schobert were also named semifinalists. Nassib can become the fifth Penn State player to win the Bednarik Award. Past winners include LaVar Arrington (1999), Paul Posluszny (2005, 2006) and Dan Connor (2007). Connor was the last Big Ten player to win the Bednarik award, although Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh won the award in 2009 while the Huskers were in the Big 12.

Nassib leads the nation in tackles for loss with 18.5 in nine games for a loss of 112 yards. He also has an interception and 13.5 sacks this season. He has forced five fumbles too.
