When the 2012 football campaign started Zach Zwinak was a name on the roster that most weren’t too familiar with. The sophomore had very little game experience, only rushing the ball 3 times last year, and wasn’t the marquee running back in preseason.
It wasn’t until late September that we would get the first glimpse at this downhill runner. When Penn State welcomed Temple into Beaver Stadium, we saw Zwinak explode for 94 yards, a career high in both yards and attempts and act as the featured back in the Nittany Lions offense.
The following week against Illinois, Zwinak hit the 100 yard rushing mark on 19 attempts and crossed the goal line twice in a Penn State blowout. For the second time in 2012, Zwinak was the featured back for the Nittany Lions, and was proving to be an effective runner.
In an offense that relies on depth and many moving parts, Zwinak has found a role as a major contributor. He has rushed for over 600 yards this season and 4 touchdowns. With four games of 100 plus rushing yards, Zwinak has emerged as the primary back for the Nittany Lions. He continues to run downhill, and impress coaches week after week.
Fresh off a 141 yard performance against Nebraska, Zwinak looks to continue his success against Indiana this week. The sophomore will be here for quite some time, and looks to be the future for the Nittany Lions.
