It’s time once again for another edition of ‘People Who Like Their Current Employer and Those Who Don’t’. Even though you might not realize it, there is hockey news to talk about after the end of the SC Finals and July 1. Here’s a quick look around the league at some recent signings.
People Who Like Their Current Employer
- The top news today is that Mats Sundin loves him some Maple Leafs. The team’s captain signed a one-year deal valued at $5.5 million, taking a $700,000 pay cut.
- Old Man Winter Chris Chelios is going to give it another go with Detroit, he re-signed for $850,000 today.
- The Ducks are not wasting any time savoring the Stanley Cup, as they re-signed Travis Moen ($1.825 mil, two years) and George Parros ($1.1 mil, two years) to new contracts today.
- Yesterday the Tampa Bay Lightning announced that they had re-signed Kyle Wanvig (one year) and Nick Tarnasky (three years). I haven’t been able to find any of the financial details involved.
- Update (7:40 PM): TSN is reporting that Coach Lindy Ruff and GM Dacry Regier have re-signed with Buffalo.
…And People Who Don’t
- Not that Pierre Turgeon has anything against the Avalanche, but TSN is reporting that he will announce his retirement in the near future. I’ll always remember him for putting up 132 points in the 1992-93 season with the Islanders. He played every game that year, but would got knocked out of the playoffs by a ridiculously dirty hit from Dale Hunter of the Capitals. Sadly, that’s also the last time the Islanders won a playoff series.
- Vancouver’s Lee Goren is leaving the continent after signing a contract with Skelleftea AIK in Sweden.
- Boston’s Nathan Dempsey has signed with SC Bern, a team in Switzerland. At least I think that’s what the article says. Who knows, maybe ‘Der Verteidiger wird nächste‘ means that he is starting a nacho store. Seriously though, it is being reported on english websites, as well.
- Update (7:40 PM): Larry Brooks of the New York Post is reporting that Jarkko Immonen and Bryce Lampman of the Rangers have signed contracts to play in Finland next season. _uacct = “UA-1868762-1”;
