Petition to get Dennis Hopson’s Number Retired

For those who are having trouble remembering Mr. Hopson, Jeremy Birmingham helpfully wrote an excellent treatise on Hopson only a couple months ago over at 11W’s. That’s one great way to get to know the so-called “Forgotten Man”.

Another way is to watch this video of Dennis breaking Herb William’s Ohio State all-time scoring record – a record that still stands today.

Lastly, you may recall when Evan Turner netted a pair of triple-doubles back in the 2009-2010 basketball season. Evan Turner was only the second player to ever net a triple-double. The first was Dennis Hopson, who did it once in 1986.

That’s right, not Jimmy Jackson, nor Scoonie Penn, Michael Conley, Greg Oden, Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek, Gary Bradds, or any other name you can think of ever managed to pick up a triple double. For the first 100 years of Ohio State Basketball, only Dennis Hopson secured that honor.

Dennis Hopson was never a National Player of the Year, but that shouldn’t make a difference. John Havlicek wasn’t, nor was Katie Smith. Both their names are honored with their number.
