The 25th game of the 2008 season–a game many (most? all?) Brewers’ fans have been looking forward to, as it means that Mike Cameron has finished serving his 25-game suspension and can now become a Milwaukee Brewer. And, with 14 pitchers and only 11 position players on the 25-man roster, the odds are pretty good that a pitcher will lose his roster spot when Cameron is activated Monday or Tuesday.
As for the actual game, the Crew lost on a 10th home run by former Brewer infielder Wes Helms, by a score of 3-2.
Manny Parra made the start and stated his case to remain both on the roster and in the rotation–Parra pitched 5 scoreless innings before surrendering a pair of runs in the sixth; Parra fanned three, but also walked three and gave up six hits. Billy Hall tied the game at 2-2 with a pinch-hit solo shot in the 7th inning–his 7th of the season, and still best on the club.
Skipper Ned Yost ran out of position players in the 10th inning of Sunday’s game…easy to do when you only have 3 position players on the bench to start each game. Also, Dave Bush was warmed up in the bullpen in the 10th, probably an indication that Bush is going to remain on the 25-man and, possibly, that he will be moved to the bullpen.
With Bush being safe, the odds are that either Carlos Villanueva or Parra will be optioned to AAA Nashville…and Bush would return to the rotation. Some fans are hoping that Doug Melvin can deal beleaguered reliever Derrick Turnbow before Tuesday, but Turnbow walking two of the three batters he faced Sunday did nothing to improve his market value.
The Brew Crew’s record now stands at 14-11, two games behind the Cubs and in 3rd place, and the Brewers now travel to Chicago for three games against those same Cubs.
