Pollard has been fined before for this kind of hit. And I watched this one a few times. It’s fair to say the defender engages Gonzo as the WR is stepping out of bounds. So many times, a defender will realize this and give it a shove or two-hand touch to make sure. But Pollard doesn’t let up, and after hitting Gonzo, proceeds to drive the WR into the FieldTurf, a good 3 yards out of bounds.
It should have been a penalty. It should be a fine. And it shouldn’t take a guy going on IR to get both. Not in this supposedly, all-of-a-sudden, less-tolerant NFL, which seems to have a thing for Pittsburgh LB James Harrison and his three excessive-hit fines totaling $100,000. Guess they forgot about Pollard, who prompted rules to change about how to hit QBs after his low hit that ended Tom Brady’s season one game into 2008.
