Phil B on Manning

Good thoughts

More than that, I’ve always thought what separates Manning from others is how he plays the game. Nobody has more control over the offense. The series of plays are merely “suggestions,” kind of a Tom Moore cheat-sheet audio in Manning’s helmet transmitter. Manning surveys the defense each time, then decides what’s the best possible play for what he’s seeing. It’s all about taking what the defense is giving. It’s about having a coach on the field, a guy who has the brain to factor in so many hours of film study and game experience and spit out a logical conclusion in seconds. Who else really does that on every play?

Take a moment and think about your own job, what you do, how long it takes you to do it. I can sit here and wax poetic with some quick typing, but everything takes some time. More time than Manning takes after he reaches the line. If I had to type every paragraph, and come to every conclusion within the constraints of a play clock, I assure you there would be several delay of games, especially when working on the big stories for the newspaper, when so many interviews are crunched and considered, then only the best make the cut.
