Ben Simmons goes 1st overall to the Philadelphia 76ers. How does he fit in the city of brotherly love?
The Player: Ben Simmons was the consensus top player in the draft since the season began, and retained that status despite LSU’s poor season. He can handle and pass like a point guard, he rebounds like a center, and he has the size and length of a power forward. While there are concerns about his lack of a jump-shot and his inconsistency during his freshman year, he also has the potential to be a transcendent superstar is everything comes together.
The Fit: The 76ers have a glut of young players in the frontcourt, and adding Simmons as a power forward would further complicate a rotation that could include Jahlil Okafor, Nerlens Noel, Joel Embiid, and Dario Saric. But if they put him at point guard, suddenly he can use his offensive strengths to their fullest potential and he fills Philadelphia’s greatest need. Brett Brown and the 76ers’ coaching staff are already drawing up ways to unleash Simmons on the rest of the Eastern Conference.
The Spot: Starting point guard
The Grade: A
