In last month’s draft, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Vanderbilt wide receiver Jordan Matthews in the second round. Many people expect Matthews to replace Desean Jackson’s production as the Eagles released Jackson earlier in the offseason.
So far in minicamp and now OTAs, Matthews has been turning heads and opening eyes. According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Matthews “took a number of reps with the ones.” In previous practices, Matthews was running with the second team offense and developing great chemistry with quarterback Mark Sanchez.
This is great news that Matthews is still performing well as he has also been taking punt returns in practice. We still have to see Matthews in pads as he has been compared to another number 81 that used to run up and down the NovaCare Complex and that is Terrell Owens.
If Matthews can perform well in training camp and then do well in the preseason, there is no reason why he will not be starting Week 1 in the regular season. He will not be the number 1 or 2 wide receiver as that goes to Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper. But in Chip Kelly’s offense, Matthews will be put into position to make plays and to be a playmaking threat on the outside or in the slot.
